The Matthew Nierstedt Honor Wall

The Matthew Nierstedt Honor Wall was born out of a heart for using selfless action to perpetuate the memory of loved ones who served our nation, who are no longer with us. Matthew (affectionately called Matty by many) served in the U.S. Navy, on the Crash & Salvage Team, on the flight deck of the USS Eisenhower, alongside our Founder and Founding Directors. After serving in the Navy, Matty followed in his grandfather’s footsteps by proudly fulfilling his dream of becoming a Firefighter for the Jersey City Fire Department. Sadly, in November of 2017, Matty’s life was cut short in a tragic off-duty car accident. When Shield Down formed, Matty’s parents, Charles & Patricia, wanted to honor Matty with a donation to Shield Down in his honor. So we did just that. Matty was the glue for his Crash & Salvage brothers, even years after service; frequently checking on them and visiting, ensuring they knew they weren’t forgotten. It’s only fitting that this wall be born and named in his honor.

How can you honor your fallen veteran through selfless action? We ask for a one-time donation of $100+ to Shield Down, followed by an email to info@shielddown.com containing: a picture of your veteran no longer with us, their branch of service, dates of service, and hometown, emailed with the subject line: “Matty’s Honor Wall”. Can’t afford the donation? NO WORRIES! Still email us and we will chase down a donation in their honor ourselves! Thank you for continuing on their legacy.
